I came across this video today. It reminded me of all my kids face now and what they will face in the coming years. Lex is in her first year of high school and has already had to stand tall in a few situations where the choices being made in a group weren't in line with her moral code and beliefs. I'm always proud of Lex. But, when she told me of these circumstances, I was so proud that she would choose the right, even when it was hard. I know these opportunities to make good choices will keep coming at her every day.
This video even applies to applies to me and to Ryan. What will we expose ourselves to in life? What will we watch on TV and in movies. What books will we read? What music will we listen to? I'm not saying we will be perfect. Heaven (and everyone else) knows we're not. But, this little clip was a good reminder. We never want to check our standards and religion at the door.
I enjoyed this book. I just happened to finish it on the day of his wife's funeral.
I was amazed at all he has accomplished in his life. Even though I have been a life long member of the church, there were so many details in the book that were new and unfamiliar to me. I loved getting the "behind the scenes" peek at interactions among church leaders, his family's role in his service, his experiences in Germany and with the government, and so much more.
You can truly see how his life has been devoted to serving the Lord and others. What an example of leadership, faithfulness, and service.
I wonder if there has been an uptick in Dear Jane Letters since the missionary age change announcement in conference? :)
I thought this song was funny. It coulda been me. If the current mission age were in effect when Ryan and I were dating, he would have been gone from June '91 - June '93 (Due to HS Graduation). I would have been gone October '92 - April '94.
Ryan is such a tender heart, I'm pretty sure he would have been in a relationship or married by the time I got home. It would have been a 10 month wait! (Did I get all that math right Cami?) Who knows what would have happened.
Although, I do have to say, by the skin of my teeth I lasted the full two years of his mission. So..... I guess it can be done. :)
I'm glad it all worked out. For our next mission experience, I'm relieved we'll be companions and we won't have to say goodbye.
I love this video. Even though our situation is a bit different, this is a glimpse of what we feel. When I showed this video to Collin and Izzy, Isabella said, "That sounds like Jackson".
Sometimes our home is not very peaceful. Sometimes the whole house is acutely aware of how Jackson is feeling. Sometimes, it is hard to not get frustrated yourself.
But, I do know this. I agree completely with Hyrum's dad. I too know that one day Jackson will be able to more easily communicate with us. I know his mind will be less frustrated and his words will flow more easily. I know he is a son of God and I know that we love him. And.... even though he may not always show it, I know he loves us.
I know the Internet has more and more of these types of stories popping up all the time. But for me, I never get tired of watching them. I love seeing testimonies alive and burning in the young people of this church. I'm moved every time I see a person open their call, and as I watch their reaction and the reaction of their family members. Every person has a story. I love see a portion of their journey.
This one is no exception. What a powerful testimony of being faithful, diligent, and of waiting on the Lord.
Last November, Alexis attended Young Women in Excellence. The speaker for the night was Meg Johnson.
I was excited when I heard who they were planning to have come as the speaker. I've followed Meg's blog for a while now and have always been inspired by her attitude, optimism, and how much she understands the youth and the struggles they face. She gave a great talk and we were able to take a few pictures with her after her talk.
I like this guy and his music. I love the main stream vibe and yet it's personal and is culturally relevant for me. I'm not that hip, so this is the first time I've heard his music. Are you a fan?
It started with Ryan taking the girls on a little Girl / Daddy Weekend in Park City. More on that later...
The boys and I spent Friday night watching Avengers on a huge outdoor screen for cousin Cade's birthday. It was a bit chilly but really run. We kept plenty warm with ski coats, a fire, hot dogs and soup, and our last official s'more of the season. Yum!
Saturday morning brought a bit of laundry and grocery shopping intermixed with watching Conference. Jackson attended his first Priesthood Session of conference later that night. There was a BIT (note the sarcasm) of resistence there on J's part. But, in the end, he had a smile when he returned home. However I'm guessing the source of his smile was from the cup of frozen yogurt in his hand rather than the spiritual nourishment. :)
The big news..... The lowering of age requirements for missionaries. Wow! What a great option for all of our youth.
The only problem.... no matter how much you plan your life, there are always going to be curve balls.
Collin's birthday is June 15th. Because his birthday is so late in the school year, I didn't have him go to Kindergarten "on time". He is a bit small for his age and at the time I didn't feel like he was quite ready for Kindergarten. He is more reserved and shy. I thought one more year of pre-k would serve him well. One last reason..... down the road, our little Col Ball would graduate from high school and then leave that next month on his mission. Most of the kids his age would have that year in between HS and the Mish.
Well..... there goes planning. Now all those kids who had the gap year of waiting will have been on their missions for almost a year before Collin even leaves. Instead of Collin and cousins Hayden, Alex, Jake, and Freestone all leaving together, they will all potentially pave the way for Collin.
I'm still glad I did what I did at the time and I still think Collin's grade placement is the best fit for him, however I did have to laugh about the announcement. As much as I try, sometimes I just can get my plans to fit into what the Lord has planned. :) As always, it is for the best. When I asked Collin about where he wants to serve his mission, he said, "Um... probably SLC or somewhere CLOSE to home." :) Ya.... the extra year might be good for him. :)
In other news.... I have two new recipes for you to try. Sunday we all retreated to Ryan's mom's home to watch conference. Grandma and Grandpa would be noticeably absent due to their missionary service at the conference center, but that didn't stop all of us from enjoying their home. We each brought a main dish and a side. These links were my contributions. They both passed the test and will be added to my keeper list.
1. Blueberry Stuffed French Toast - after further discussion with the family, we thought you could use any fruit in this recipe. You could even use a bag of frozen mixed fruit. I used fresh blueberries and blueberry pie filling.
2. Seminary Muffins - Not sure why these are called Seminary Muffins. Unless it is eluding to the fact that only "good" stuff is included in the recipe rather than a lot of fat and oil. :) These are only in the 200 calorie range rather than the 3-400 calories that other muffins boast. If I were to make these again, I might add just a bit more applesauce and bananas just to make them a bit more moist.
What about you? How did you feel about the missionary announcement? Around here, we can't think of a lot of negatives. We even thought of all the benefits of lowering the sister's age from 19 down to 18. That year isn't a lot of difference. But.... there's a reason I'm not in charge. :) What do I know anyway? :)
Here's to a great week!!!
ps - Tonight Jackson was QUITE distraught. He couldn't find his i-pod. After a bit of cajoling to get him to bed, I crawled in by him and we said a prayer; a prayer that we'd find his i-pod, a prayer that he'd have a good night sleep (he's been getting up TOO early, a prayer that his heart and mind would be at peace and that worry wouldn't be his constant companion. I had no sooner finished the prayer that he was quiet and still. I was actually bracing myself for new onslaught of i-pod woe. But instead... peace. I quietly crept from the room without another word.
Today while jotting down notes in a booklet, I saw repeated notes about praying with Jackson. I KNOW I need to do this. I reminded of it often in my thoughts. I know if we will do this, we can find peace. Maybe the quiet we heard tonight won't be the result after every prayer, but I know the peace will invite the spirit back when anger and anxiety chases it away.
When you are registering your child for school in the high school years, it actually may be tempting to skip Seminary. After all, that is a full credit of time that could be spent earning AP credit. However, I know the effort kids put into seminary is effort they'll never regret. It may seem like a "free" class period that doesn't matter, but in actuality, it matters more than we'll ever know. We need the Spirit with us every day. Seminary can be a haven for our youth. I recently started attending an Institute class on Friday mornings. I've only been for two weeks and have already learned much.
I came across this clip this morning. It reminded me of an e-mail I received yesterday from Alexis' seminary teacher. Lex is lucky to be able to have the seminary experience. What a blessing to be able to go and leave the ugliness of a jr. high hallway (you wouldn't believe the things she tells me) and escape into an environment that's uplifting and inspiring. I'm also incredibly thankful she has a teacher who is engaged in the learning process of his students.
At the bottom of this post is a copy of the document he sent home to parents. Remember those primary packets we've used for little kids who watch conference? Well this is a teen version - love it! But.... conference bingo with M&M's would be a fun accompaniment. :)
Here is a bit of the e-mail:
A few quick updates from the Seminary.
1) We just got done studying Matt
11-13. Here are some things you could use as conversation starters:
a. What
scriptures have you memorized and passed off? Can I help you?
b. Have you
tried the scripture mastery tools on seminary.lds.org? They are fantastic and
students get extra credit for using them.
c. What are apostles? What is a
yoke? What miracles did Jesus perform?
d. What did you learn from the
Sermon on the Mount?
2) This week we will study Matt 14-18 (Peter walks on
water, Keys promised to Peter, Mt. of Transfiguration and much more)
3) In
their home reading they should be through about Matt 23 by tomorrow.
4) General Conference is this weekend (I’m so excited) and we review and
celebrate conference by holding our own “conference in general” next Monday and
Tuesday. Students will be receiving this assignment in the next two days but to
save on emails I have attached the assignment that you are welcome to print and
do yourself or help out your student if they have questions or lose their copy.
Here is a copy of the document. The second part could be adapted for a teen FHE.

ours.
Today our little family attended the Brigham City temple dedication. It was a spiritual pay day for us.
Lexie snapped this picture during the summer when we attended the open house. The temple is beautiful, inside and out. At the end of the tour, there were a few displays with artwork from local children. My sister, Annissa, told us her son, Tucker, had the chance to participate. Based on her description, we thought this was his picture. Annissa, did we choose wisely? :) If so, Tucker you did a great job of capturing Jesus touching stones for the Brother of Jared!
After the tour, we took just a few minutes to get a family picture outside the temple. Jackson was TICKED. You see, after we finished at the temple, our plan was to head up to the cabin for the weekend. Jackson was done and was ready to go camping. So... his pictures aren't the best. But, I still love them. They capture real life... This is how we roll. :)
I wanted to snap a picture of each child by the beautiful temple wall. Jackson was having none of it. So... here are a few good ones of him. :)
Poor kid. This is torture.
This was the best we could do. :)
Izzy on the other hand.... "Mom... take another one. How about his pose, mom?" :)
Col. Need we say more? :)
He thought he looked pretty cool in my glasses. :)
Work it... work it.... And, this is Lex. :)
Lex and I had a special experience inside the temple. My sister, Annissa, had worked as a volunteer on a previous tour. She mentioned how beautiful the Bride's Room was inside the temple. When we were on the tour, I asked the woman volunteer if Alexis and I could just sneak back into the Bride's Room for a quick peek. The volunteer was so nice. She let us hurry back for a look. I'm so glad she did. It.... is.... beautiful!!! The room is sort of grey / pink. The mirror was floor to ceiling with the edges covered in crystals. It was stunning. The room took our breath away.
I quickly stood Alexis in the middle of the room and had her look into the mirror. I stood beside her with my arms around her shoulders and said, "Lex, look into the mirror." With the mirror on the opposite side of the room reflecting her image, she could see her reflection repeated infinitely into the mirrors. I told her, "Lex... this is what you are working for. This is where you want to be someday." She and I were both a little teary as we passed the volunteer on our way back to the tour. It was quite a moment. I don't think that day will be too far into the future. For a mom that is joy and saddness. Our little girl is growing up too fast!
I'm so glad we made the effort to attend the open house. The temple was beautiful. We've been to other temple open houses in recent years, but I don't know how much the kids remember. We are grateful we had yet another opportunity for them to go inside. Hopefully these moments will have made an impression in their minds and are yet one more drop of oil for their testimony.
Today's dedication of the temple was equally as beautiful. Here are a few of my take aways.
* As you know, I've been struggling with how to help Jackson with his mood. In the dedication this morning, as the temple president, President Checketts, was talking about simplifying life, I had the distinct impression to make picture charts for the boys for their morning / afternoon responsibilities. I'm hoping this will help them be more self directed with less drama. I know my Heavenly Father is mindful of me and my struggles. I was touched that this little lifeline was sent my way. Lifelines and tender mercies are all around us if we will but listen. I hope I'm always listening! I need all the help I can get.
* Lex needs to use her Baptism for the Dead recommend more. This is going on the calendar right now.
* When we attend the temple, our lives will be more simple, less difficult, and less stressful.
* Just as a temple is a dedicated house of faith, prayer, and fasting, may we dedicate ourselves to be people of faith, prayer and fasting.
* President Boyd K. Packer talked about happiness. I was hanging on his every word as he said, "Happiness at home comes from.... living the gospel and its teachings."
* The Spirit of God is such a great hymn. Ryan and I were both teary as we sang this song. We felt the great spirit and legacy of our pioneer heritage. Because of the sacrifice of others, we have been so richly blessed.
* I think it was either Sister Packer or Sister Checketts who talked about prayer. It was said that we should pray for those who were not there. Pray for those who have had their faith destroyed in the fires of life. Pray that their faith may return and that they may not dwell in the remaining ash.
I love that. Our Heavenly Father's plan is so merciful. No matter what we face in life, He has made it possible for us to return to His presence if we but humble ourselves and repent of our mistakes. None of us are perfect. We all need this gift in our lives.
After the dedication was over, we were making our way out of the Church. The hallways were full and Ryan looked around for all of our little chickens. He was about to say.... "Where's Izzy?" It was then that he remembered she had stayed with a neighbor. You had to be at least eight in order to attend.
On the way home I used his phrase, "Where's Izzy?" as a teaching moment. Izzy wasn't with us today because she wasn't old enough. But... wouldn't it be sad if one of us were missing in heaven because we didn't make good choices? Because our sweet little Izzy Busy wasn't in the car, it was a physical example of one of us missing. Ryan and I were especially sad. We had to change the subject.
"We must cherish one another, watch over one another and gain instruction, that
we may all sit down in heaven together” - Lucy Mack Smith
Oh how true this statement is for our family. We will be heartbroken if even one of us is missing. If only life were as easy as just going and picking up lost family members around the corner. But instead, we must each find our way along the path.
Luckily for us, our path today ended at our neighbor's house. Izzy spent the morning with them celebrating the temple dedication in their own way. They had cookies, pudding, talked about the temple and even made their own temples out of sugar cubes. How cute is that? Thanks Diane and Scott. We sure love ya! Thanks for going to a later session so we could all attend the dedication.
What about you? Did you attend the open house or dedication? What were your take aways?
I've always loved this song. It is simply beautiful. I never tire of it. I love the message as well as the music. I just saw this version and thought it was worth sharing. What an amazing talent. Her visible control is remarkable. She makes singing look effortless. What a gift!
Lexie found this video the other day. Maybe you've already seen it. I hadn't. I thought it was hilarious. I couldn't relate with all of the Mormonisms, but a few had us rolling in laughter. I admit.... I use the D.I. threat with the kids' toys frequently. Actually it isn't a threat anymore. During the last few months, quite a few things have just.... "disappeared".
After you watch the video, take a second to look at Lexie's Trek pictures below. I just dropped her off at the Stake Center this morning. They left at 7:00 am. She was NOT excited. :) I think she was curious about the opportunity, but not really excited. After all, there are not a lot of teenagers that are truly going to be pumped about dressing up in long skirts, blouses and bonnets, sleeping on the ground, walking several miles a day in the heat while pulling a handcart, and not being with friends and people you know really well.
But.... she made it. She's on the bus to Wyoming. We did our part and now I'm hoping the Spirit will do the rest. I'm hopeful she'll be taught and her testimony strengthened. I am grateful for the pioneers who sacrificed everything they had, even their very lives, for the faith and legacy I now enjoy. I don't think I would have made a good frontier pioneer. But... as my posterity looks back on my life, hopefully they will be grateful for the legacy I will leave behind. Hopefully the realm of my efforts will be appreciated and will lay a foundation for future generations to build upon
And now... some laughs... Don't you love how it is titled Sh*z (shiz - Mormon cuss word)
Lexie.... looking forward to Trek (minus her shoes :)
This is her.... "I'm not very excited, but I'll be a good sport" face. I wanted a close up. I love her bonnet with her eyes. Lexie Lou-Lou, you're so pretty 'cause your eyes are so blue, blue! Love ya, Lex. I can't wait to hear about your adventure.
Last Monday, the kids and I piled in the car and headed to the land of promise, BYU. :) I had to throw that in because the majority of the family are Ute Fans! :) :)
Lexie was on her way to EFY. It wasn't ideal to take all of the other kids, but I knew I would be gone longer than their solo abilities would allow. Lex was a little mortified all her little bros and sister would be in tow. I gave them the speech before we got out of the car in the Heritage Halls Parking Lot. You know, the one that says.... "No running around, stay by mom, don't be crazy, we don't want to embarrass Alexis."
Lex did really great job of being patient with the kids. We helped her get checked in and then went in search of her room. She was pleasantly surprised that there were lots of cute boys also attending EFY that week. :)
We found Lexie's room and helped her get unpacked. I helped her make her dorm room bed and thought a bit about how it would be to drop her off for her Freshman year of college. I know that day is just going to be around the corner. Sniff.
Lex was a little grossed out by the dorms. I did have to admit that Richards Hall had seen better days. I told her Helman Halls were a little nicer and not to cross BYU off of her colleges to check out based on this one room. :)
Lex didn't go to EFY with anyone she knew. Lex was a little nervous about who her room mate might be and if they were going to be "weird". :) Right as we were leaving, her room mate, Whitney, showed up. Whitney was from Oklahoma and had just moved to Utah. Within seconds, they were fast friends and I knew all would be well. I made my exit and said a little prayer Alexis would have an amazing week. Because she doesn't have Girls' Camp this year (I know, right!!!! Grrrrr!), I knew this, along with Trek, would be her only two spiritual booster shots for the coming school year.
Because Alexis and the rest of the family leads a busy life, we didn't notice her absence from the home that much during the days of the week. However, when the evenings rolled around, we wondered how our Lou-Lou was surviving. The house was quite. We weren't shooing Lex to bed at 11:30 or later. We weren't telling her to come and pick up her million pairs of shoes. We weren't greeted by piles of clothes and pom poms when we entered her room. We missed her (not the mess - just her :) )
EFY ended Saturday morning. Checkout was by SEVEN AM - in PROVO. Yeah..... that was going to be a challenge. Luckily my cousin's daughter's reception was in Springville on Friday night. I told Lex I would pick her up after the reception.
I waited in the parking lot until after the "companies - the organized groups of kids" completed their last evening devotional. One of the companies was across the lawn from my car. I was able to watch and get a little taste of what Lex experienced during the week. They closed their devotional with a word of prayer and by singing the song, 'God Be With You Till We Meet Again'. There were many tears and hugs. This group of youth had bonded during the week, strengthened their testimonies, and learned how to put on the Armor of God for a full week. Many of them will not ever cross paths again. It was bitter sweet.
As I watched this group depart and head for their respective dorms, I thought of Lex and hoped she was having the same powerful experience. My cell phone rang and Lou was on the other end of the phone. She had spotted my car and was ready to have me come in and help her pack.
Her dorm room looked just like her room at home. A mess! :) But, it also showed signs of success. Treats on the desk, scriptures on the bed, and two room mates who were hugging tearful goodbyes. Two young strangers had shared an incredible experience that they'd remember for the rest of their lives. The hugs and tears continued for another 1/2 hour as Lex said goodbye to the company's girls. The girls were from all over Utah, Arizona, California, etc. So many girls.... so many different personalities, backgrounds and experiences. What a treasure for her to meet so many amazing young women who were trying to live the gospel in their lives.
Lexie learned a lot that week. Not only did she realize just how picky of an eater she was (she was starving most of the week due to all the processed food), she grew closer to her Father in Heaven and Savior and strengthened her testimony of prayer, faith, temples, eternal families, and so much more.
She also came away with a "souvenir" of sorts. A cute boy, named Ryan, (from HOOPER - Grandma Gus - but she says he isn't that country). I guess she takes after her mom with liking boys named Ryan. :) Facebook will have to do for now. She doesn't turn 16 for another year in a half. It was good for her to see the pond of good young men is larger than her own little Jr. High.
We love ya, Lex. We can't wait for you to go again next year. BYU this year. USU, next?. We'll just wait and see. I have a feeling this year may be hard to beat.
On Fast Sunday for the past several months, I'll ask Jackson if he wants to bear his testimony. He ALWAYS looks down, shakes his head, scowls a bit, and says no. Izzy on the other hand, wants to bear her testimony EVERY Fast Sunday. :)
Getting up in front of the entire congregation is difficult and usually out of the question - especially for something like a testimony. We can barely get him to do it for Family Home Evening.
Today was Fast Sunday. When the testimony portion of the meeting started, I leaned over to Jackson and asked him if he wanted to bear his testimony. At first he said no. I quickly reminded him of his goals. I didn't think this would help him, but I gave it a try. To my surprise, Jackson JUMPED UP and went to the pulpit. Yes. You read that right. Jackson, our Jackson, the one who doesn't want to talk to you or look you in the eye, jumped up and eagerly went to bear his testimony. We were all in shock. Ryan and I looked at each other with such shock.
Jackson bore a sweet and simple testimony that he knows the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is true and that he knows his Savior is true. (His words). :) At the end of his testimony, he had a huge smile on his face and giggled. He did it! We were all so proud of him.
We made some changes with medication this weekend. To say the least... I think we are on the right track. We are seeing more giggles, more playfulness, more interaction with the kids, etc. We are not done tweaking, but I hope this is a first of many positive reports. We love you Jackson!
I'm so glad missions are possible even when things seem impossible. I know Jackson will be able to serve if he desires to do so. What a blessing for these boys, their families, and all the lives they touch.
Yesterday our family said goodbye to our littlest angel, Alene Hope.
After many struggles to have a baby and then finally getting pregnant with their third child, we found out this week that my brother, Jon and his wife, Camille had lost their little 17 week baby, Alene Hope. We were just together for Mother's Day and all seemed well with the pregnancy. The next day we learned things had changed.
My brother and me at the cemetery. Jon and I have come a long way. It is funny that sibling combat zones turn into beautiful adult relationships with time. It is encouraging to me as a mother that the bad days I have with my fighting children will one day turn into unconditional love.
My sil, Kimi, did an amazing job with the flowers. Thank you Kimi, for all your efforts.
Our hearts have been mindful of Annissa's sil, Shirlene. She just lost a baby last month at 39 weeks in utero. Such tough loses! We always wonder why these things have to happen and yet we know our Father in Heaven has a plan for us.
Little Alene, named after Cami's mom (middle name), is layed to rest by the edge of Babyland in our local cemetery. I have a feeling these little ones will climb and sit and play by this fence for years to come.
I remember when we buried Annalee's little Carson eight years ago. In the dedicatory prayer for the grave it was said that it would be a sacred place and that Carson would play vicariously through his brothers and sisters when they visited the site. I can see this will be true too for Aiden and Alex as they visit the resting place for Alene's mortal body.
Isabella is already asking when we are going for a walk to visit Alene. We love our little local cemetery. It may sound weird to say, but it truly is a peaceful and beautiful place. I know cemeteries are not parks, but most people in our town feel the same way about this little plot of land. It is a comforting place to be as we walk along the paths and pay respect to so many of the people we know - parents and grandparents of close friends, high school friends, dear neighbors and so many more.
My children had a lot of questions when they learned of their tiny cousin's passing. Collin's heart was especially touched. As Ryan tucked him in for bed he wondered about Alene and Jon and Cami's family. I'm so glad he is mindful of his cousins.
Jackson was solemn too. He knelt by the vault and watched carefully during the service.
Kimi also gave Cami flowers for each member of Jon and Cami's family to lay on the casket.
Annalee and Cami are so much alike. They are both sensitive and mindful of other people. We love them both with all our hearts. They also share the promise of being able to raise these special spirits in the millennium of time. What a sweet opportunity that will be for these wonderful mothers. At last their hearts will be healed.
After Jon offered a beautiful dedicatory prayer for the grave, Steve sang a touching song. He sang the song, I am a Child of God. However these were the lyrics. I wasn't sure how he was able to have a strong voice. The rest of us were a mess.
I am a child of God and He has called me home.
My earthly journey's through
but still, I do not walk alone.
He leads me, guides me, walks beside me,
helps me find the way.
He welcomed me with open arms. I live with Him
today.
I am a child of God and I have gone ahead.
My earthly life
was brief but oh, such peace and love you gave.
You loved me, held me, stood
beside me and though I cannot stay.
You gave me much to help me and I live
with Him today.
I am a child of God and I will wait for
you.
Celestial glory shall be ours, if you can but endure.
I'll lead you,
guide you, walk beside you.
Help you find the way.
I'll welcome you with
open arms
One bright Celestial day.
After the service we released sweet little pink balloons with attached messages.
The only problem.... was the breeze that carried our balloons right into the tree. But... Alex's balloon, made it safely to the sky. How fitting that Alene's older brother's balloon would make it safely heavenward.
Another little angel, miss Izzy, sure had a tough time. We all did. But Isabella had an especially tender heart. She was so very sad.
It is hard enough for adults to wrap their heads and hearts around the temporary separation of loved ones. But little ones have an especially tough time. I remember being about 8 yrs old and attending the viewing of my uncle, Ron, who passed away in his 20's from Leukemia. He left behind his wife and 3 young children. I can still see myself sitting on the couch across from the casket at the mortuary. I remember being SO sad and just crying (the ugly cry). I think someone took me to another room.
I'm older now, and even though I still am proficient at the ugly cry, I have my testimony of the gospel to see me through such trial and tragedy. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I will see my uncle Ron again and get to meet our sweet little Alene Hope. This separation of death is only temporary. The relationships and love we share in this life will be perpetuated beyond the grave. Because Jon and Camille were sealed in the temple, their earthly family will be together forever. All is not lost. It will be through their faithfulness that all will be restored.
I've been so impressed with Jon and Cami's outlook. Even though they can no longer hold Alene in their arms, they will hold her in their hearts until that sweet day arrives when they are reunited, never again to be separated.
Jon and Cami, thank you for strengthening us all through your faith and example. We love you!
Have you seen this one yet? I know these get shared on blogs and Facebook quite a bit. However, a line in this one caught in my throat. Denny said, "I knew that my mom felt like I was... damaged. And that hurt. I could never talk to her about it."
That line gave me pause. I wonder how Jackson feels? He can't often articulate his feelings and emotions. That is just part of the 7q11.23 Duplication. But does Jackson relate with Denny on some level? Does he think that I feel he is damaged????
I HOPE NOT!
I don't think of Jackson has damaged. In fact, I think of him as a super hero. He makes leaps and bounds every day in order to traverse, what is for him, a very complicate existence. He is trapped in this body that is full of anxiety. The anxiety can cause fear, sadness, irritability, anger, frustration, and intolerance. Anxiety combined with communication challenges only exacerbate his difficulties. But... his duplication has also caused a deeper feeling of love, empathy, tolerance, insight, and so much for me and for our family.
Jackson may struggle with physical trials in this life. But in reality, he isn't any different from any of us. We ALL struggle. Our struggles may just not be as apparent as Jackson's. Maybe we struggle with depression, overcoming sin, judging others to harshly, pornography, various addictions, envy, contempt for others, or maybe we lack faith and hope.... the list could go on and on.
No.... Jackson isn't damaged. And, either are we. We can all be made whole again one day, no matter what our personal struggles may be, through our Savior's redeeming sacrifice and infinite love. I'm so lucky to have Jackson in my life. He teaches me and those around him every day to be loving, patient, and full of hope.
Jackson may not be able to physically fly, but he is certainly soaring as he meets challenge after challenge in this life. Well done buddy. We are SOOO very proud of you. And, we are SOOOO lucky to be your mom and dad.
